Neighbor Library Cards

A person unable to verify a permanent address in our community is eligible for a Neighbor Library Card. Verification of identity is required to obtain a Neighbor Card. A photo I.D. is preferred, but if it is not available, another proof of identity is required.

To create a Neighbor card:

  • Search for patron in WF to see if they have an existing card
  • Create using NEIGHBOR profile
  • Use a standard library card (any card beginning with 40722 or 24410)
  • User accounts created as NEIGHBOR expire in 60 days.
  • Neighbor Cards may be renewed when necessary with verification of identity.

NEIGHBOR patrons:

  • Can have up to three (3) physical items checked out at one time (See Circ Rules for details)
  • Place limited number of holds on physical items (See Circ Rules for details)
  • Can use their cards to access all MFRL e-resources and public computers.

Lifespan of Neighbor Card

Patrons are sent a Your card is expiring email on the Wednesday of the week before their card expires.

Neighbor Cards are purged every Wednesday. Any card that expired the prior Saturday or earlier is eligible for purging. Cards are not purged if there is a checkout or active hold for a physical item on the account.

Staff Procedures for Conversion to Regular Library Card

If a patron meets the criteria to receive a permanent library card, staff should edit the existing account.

In WorkFlows, staff should:

  • Look up patron’s User Account, and edit:
    • Verify address with patron’s proof of residency.
    • Change Profile from NEIGHBOR to appropriate selection (Adult, Juvenile, etc.)
    • In the Privilege tab, check the Extend User's Library Privilege checkbox.
      • This will extend privilege to two years from today.
    • Save changes and follow prompts.
  • Check your work.
